Joe and Kate represent many families in Nashville who experienced loss during the March 3 tornado. Their apartment complex was damaged and was without power for over a week. They spent two nights in a hotel and then moved in with friends until power was restored. They had to replace the contents of their refrigerator. Joe bartends and Kate cuts hair at establishments in East Nashville. The week after the tornado, Joe was back to work and Kate had found another space to rent a chair. Their income was cut in half in March and now both of their businesses can't open until the "safer at home" order has been lifted. Rooftop will use funds from Tornado Recovery gifts to pay Joe and Kate's April rent, allowing them to use unemployment for other bills.
